Degree show document (1) recording daily action

"What did I do today?"

My work  is inspired by ordinary aspects of daily life and our memories of these experiences.
I wanted to record my daily actions and everyday simple scenes of beauty so kept a diary and took photographs of them. The idea of this project came from my last project  "My daily commitment 366 days". (I went to the meadow park everydayand take the Arthurt's seat from the same point and same time over one year. )Over this project, I became interested in time in our everyday life and to keep something every single days.

So in my diary, obviously, I had to write "9am~ morning photo"(I named the action for myself).
I need to explain about  my diary because it might be a bit different from just common diary people think.  I write just actions I did at the day then add simple comments about it, and what I thought. In addition, I make a note of interesting ideas come up to my mind, it's all in a chronological time.

Then I sometimes try to read the past diaries intentionally. That made me think about human's memory.I sometimes can't remember what I have done in the morning at the day. Not only that, I found that even if I had a really bad day, I can't remember the details and  why I felt that way, it means that it might be just a small thing or I do not need to remember. However, on the other hand, it can be said that I always miss a chance to learn lesson from the experiences and do the same things again and again in my life.

While I was thinking sort of things through the diaries, I just thought that if there were some photographs in the diary, my memories would recall vividly, even if the photographs look nothing special, it would help to recall my memories and might be very interesting.
So I decided to try the new project for my final show.

Recalling our memories by using all our senses.

Since I started the everyday project, I often came to think
about memory.
Everyday life seems to be the same for most people, in other words we all experience the same things everyday. However what about our feelings or emotions every single day? They could be slightly different even when we did the same things, sometimes good, bad or indifferent. So while our life contains repetition of many things, we experience different feelings everyday but I do not remember how I felt on a particular day or what I was thinking about. People might think that we do not need remember all of this, I do not mean that to forget is bad thing but it also mean that we easily forget valuable experiences we feel in daily life. That thought made me write my everyday life journal and what is more, to deliberately try to reread it. My past reminds me that I made effort toward life. Through this practice, I found that when I was reading the journal, some images always come to my mind and I was trying to remember the days by using vision in my mind. Then I come to think of importance of vision and I started taking pictures of my daily life. I found that using all senses we have, for instance feel something, writing it by hand, which helps to know the feeling at the moment, reading them and recognize the past to then learn about yourself from it, all of this is very important to live a meaningful everyday life. The past often remains in our mind as an unclear image so to make images of things can inspire us because inside the brain, the minds visual senses and existing memories and knowledge can synthesise together. All the things we can see do not make up the full picture and if we rely on only the visible, that would also be a one sided point of view. So while some think the value of vision is in discovering the truth about external reality there is saying which contradicts this, namely, ‘appearances are deceptive’. In other words, perception and knowledge are frequently at odds with one another. Since I started to think about visual culture, I realized that today we live in in a media saturated environment and therefore the eyes experience a glut of imagery, which also means that we tend to be passive. I would think that we might need to commit to output our internal images as visual things by using any tools that what we have. If we could do it more freely, our potential to be
creative would develop. For that reason, we sometimes need to avoid visual information from eyes and should focus on our internal image otherwise to develop our visual literacy and imagination would be difficult. If we would like to have creative life, we need to practice consciously paying attention to our feelings.

C02 murmur

Co2 project murmur

It was our project exhibition today.
I would think it went well and we didn't need to use the lights in the space, which was great just using natural light from the window and getting dark naturally. I think it was good to let the viewers focus on the film.

After editing the films, Christine went to the place and recorded
sounds there. When I saw the images changing and hear the audio together, I felt like I was in the place even I am in the c02 space, it was very comfortable space.

co2 project-5

We had meeting to discuss about our project title. We tried to talk how we felt when we were making the work each other. Because in some point, we worked separately (I took photos, she edited them) so we tried to find something common feeling. Then we found that the place we chose was a bit strange place it is calm and very quiet but also it was quite busy path. (people were passing through the paths than we expected)

I tried to find a word which has good meaning and bad meaning.
I am not very happy to decide the title in English because title is quite symbolic of the art work so I often confused to chose right phrases or words in English.

But it suddenly the word of 'murmur' came to my mind and fortunately she agreed with the title so we decided to use it.

-murmur-
*to say sty in a soft quiet voice that is difficult to hear or understand
*to make a quiet continuous sound
*(literary)to complain about sb/sth, but not openly
*a quiet expression of feeling
*a low continuous sound in the background
*(medical)a faint sound in the chest usually a sign damage or disease in the heart

CO2 project-4

I started to take photos at 27th and have done it for 5days.
Unfortunately? the weather wasn't very good some of days and the photos doesn't look good but I found that is quite normal in Edinburgh.

It took about 30 minutes for the shooting. The place seems to be quiet and empty street but there are always some people who pass there. Interestingly, most of people (probably tourists) try to take a photo of the Arthur's seat from there.

Through the 5days, I felt the place was very strange...I don't know the exact reason but I strongly felt these 5days were different. I didn't feel that way when I was doing the everyday photo project in the meadows.

CO2 project-3

We went to look for somewhere good point to see
Arthur's seat and she was interested in (the close?)
called Jacob's Ladder so we climbed up there and there were
interesting lanes.

I thought that there are still a lot of streets or closes
which I don't know yet in Edinburgh.
Even I live here over one year, streets in Edinburgh make
me confused and every time when I got lost I try to enjoy
finding new streets(if I have a time though).

We decided to do at this ↑ point.

CO2 project-2

Co2 meeting with Christine

Since we have decided to work together we have been sending
e-mails each other and finally we could make a time to have meeting for our project.

We hardly had talked each other but once we had group critic
in the last semester.
So she remembered my project and she tried to use the idea of
my project. She also has made video works before so we decided
to make film using images which I took.

So we decided to take panoramic photos from the same place for five days, which is similar idea of my own project but I was interested in that.

Because I haven't had experience to make video works before and I was interested in that how I would feel doing the same things somewhere else(not the meadow).
Then we decided to use something iconic scene of Edinburgh.
